We wrote this Mini-Guide to serve two functions:

One: To illustrate the power of music,
as a vessel of empathy,
capable of invigorating those previously thought to be lifeless,
Two: To also inspire the next generation,
to take a journey of awakening.

The fate of many living things hangs in the balance.

AIF provides “Alive Inside” and “Comm-University” tools and practices,
from hosting screenings in your communities,
creating youth/elder connections,
and sharing open-source practices emerging from communities all over the world.

I’m caring for my 76 YO Mother who is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. I’d also like to help the staff where she lives have more successful relationships with many of the residents they care for. Some of them are tough cases.

Several years ago I saw the movie “Alive Inside” for the first time. I was so moved by what I saw. I lead a community service group at a middle school that is very excited about doing something for the seniors in our community.

I live in a rural area and work with our community elders. I am seeing more and more elders with dementia and I am passionate in helping them stay active, independent and aging successfully at home. I would love to integrate our youth into the lives of our elders and this may be the bridge to do so.

I am a home manager at an assisted living home and would love any tools to improve on teaching the importance of empathy.

I discovered the Alive Coalition after my dear mother was stricken with Alzheimer’s. As someone at the tale end of the baby boomer generation, I am seeing now what we have created in terms of how we care for our elderly and I am appalled and shocked. And with the rise in the dementia epidemic, it simply isn’t acceptable. I want to be a part of bridging the gap between our youth and or elderly, where more compassion and empathy is necessary in order to make changes in the way we deal with aging and the end of life. There IS a better way!

I work in Long Term Care Homes and this falls right in line with the culture I work so hard to promote.

I want to get a Grant through the Placerville Elks Lodge to use for members of our communities. We can then serve memory care patients in our County of El Dorado

I enjoyed the documentary, and plan on purchasing headphone and filling them with music as a service project with a chorus I direct.

I am currently coordinating and supporting a team of volunteers who visit socially isolated elders in aged care facilities. I encourage empathy and would like to provide creative tools for the volunteers to use to connect and communicate with the people they are visiting. I am so inspired by the movie and how music has deep meaning and connection for all of us.

Need more information for a speech at a senior center. We distribute headphones to those in need in our community. Would you have any fliers that I may pass out to seniors?

My grandma has a serious case of dementia. She stays in a carying house, speaks nothing, just vegatate. I saw the movie and I think this idea is spectacular!! I want to try this on her!

I lost my mother to Alzheimer’s last November. I have been looking for a way to give back to this community and to inspire our students to get involved.

I am an Elementary Music Teacher and have integrated “Habits of Musicians” into my curriculum. One of these habits is what we call “Flexible Empathy”; which in essence is the habit of looking for the beauty in others (as well as in inanimate objects, art, music, etc). I would like to enhance my students’ experiences with Flexible Empathy (and in the process, enhance the lives of seniors) by getting them involved in this project.

After seeing the movie I am inspired to share the “music is medicine” message to my work team. In our company, we have a large number of nurses who work in home care and hospice and with special needs pediatric humans (first and patients second!) and I would love to see us implement this therapy and see those we work with come alive! Personally I have experienced music as healing and know it brings us to a better place emotionally. This is so needed! Thank you for creating this valuable work.

I am a Music Therapist and I recognize the value of music for all people and especially those who have dementia. I have observed the powerful effects of music during my career and as a volunteer.
